Carriages
Every Salem Carriage is custom designed and features the skills and manufacturing integrity of the industry's Leader in Linear Carriages. Sawmill operations around the world are reducing costs and increasing recovery and profits with the rugged dependability of Salem Linear Carriages.
It isn't enough in the sawmill industry to claim leadership. Leadership must be earned through time tested products, parts, support and integrity! Salem has nearly 50 years of parts on record:
Salem built the first Retrofit Linear Carriage in 1978.
Salem designed and built the first complete linear carriage in 1979.
Salem has more linear carriages in operation than any other manufacturer.
Salem and Salem's Linear Carriage have passed every test!

Linear Positioner Knees
The ultimate in control, flexibility and accuracy.
Simplifies infinite tapering with individual hydraulic cylinders on each knee.
Knee motion is smoother through continual knee speed and acceleration control.
Accuracy is improved and maintenance is less through the elimination of mechanical components and mechanism wear. Special heavy duty trunnion and rod eye design insure accuracy.
The hydraulic system has a built in shock absorbing circuit and regenerative circuitry.
Dogs
Rugged and powerful for positive log holding.
The dogs move up and down on a heavy duty slide bar, driven by a powerful specially designed air cylinder.
Dogs are located in the center of the knee, especially for infinite tapering.
Knees
Extra heavy duty design to allow improved accuracy over a long life.
Knees are built to withstand the force imposed by log loading and still hold their accuracy.
Standard Construction Features:
Frame -Heavy duty wide flange beam; a complete weldment, gussetted and braced for strength; front main beam is fish plated box construction.
Trucks - Wheels are machined from wear resistant alloy steel; axles are of non-rotating design and are made from high strength alloy steel; Wheels are carried by a double set of cup and cone roller bearings and are adjustable to set proper clearance.
Headblocks - Rugged steel fabrication with heavy duty rectangular tubing main beams; extra large bed plates are industrial hard chrome plated and are reversible; a full wrap around nose plate protects the headblock from the log turner.
Knees - Built from heavy duty steel plate; gussetted and braced; top of knee is open for easy removal and maintenance of board dogs; Gibs are of rugged construction and are fully adjustable; wear strips are of cartridge design for quick replacement. Total design consideration has been given to this critical area to assure maximum accuracy and minimum maintenance.
